Garden Kitchen Lab

The Garden Kitchen Lab is a backyard-to-table educational program for underserved communities. Our mission is to give youth and their families access to healthy and locally grown food through starting and sustaining food-producing gardens. This hands-on multi-disciplinary program puts the power in the hands of community citizens, so they understand the link between food production, the environment and their health, and take ownership of their nutrition.

“Food Lab” at Garden Kitchen Lab

Garden Kitchen Lab is developing a new series of projects called “Media With A Purpose”; which aims at using technology as a vehicle to learn about sustainability and other cultures through food and cooking.

Thank you Media Coordinators Chad Chenali and Belinda McKeever for collaborating with me on this project!

Hello Spring! — Garden Kitchen Lab at Sunset, McCarren, Red Hook & St. John’s Media Labs

A huge thank you to all the wonderful people who is making this program possible!!! My total gratitude to all the NYC Parks Media Education Coordinators Beatrice Toscano at Sunset Recreation Center and Diana Baker at the McCarren Play Center. To all our amazing volunteers, who show every time and give us their full support: Andrew Maslowski, who tends gardens at all or four locations, performs soil tests, helped us build and assemble trellises at St. John’s and assists teaching at Red Hook. To Maureen Medina and Keith Smith, who water the gardens at St. John’s and Red Hook every single day! To Maureen McNellis who helped open the Red Hook garden and kickoff the season, and to Dianne Bliffeld for leading the class at Red Hook. I LOVE you all, you give this project meaning.

Thank you #Katie’sKrops for continuing giving us your support since 2014 for buying all the organic seeds and seedlings for all our gardens; and to #LianeNewton #USAGDEV #nycbeekeeping.org for buying scales to weight our produce at all our garden, and funding the stakes project at St. John’s.

Special thanks to NYC Parks Five Borough and the Sustainability Division for assembling and delivering all our compost bins in record time!!! Beautiful work! 🙂

Earth Day at Red Hook

Organized by the Red Hook Recreation Center, the Earth Day celebrations were a wonderful opportunity for NYC Parks Media Education and Garden Kitchen Lab to meet-and-greet with other like minded organizations. Thank you #GrowGotham (Gotham Greens) for donating 1,200 basil and lettuce seedlings giveaways. It was a fantastic way to start the growing season, and the children absolutely loved it!!! Thank you Isiah Forde, Ali Khan and Deborah Grant for the invite!

~ Garden Kitchen Lab McCarren Play Center

Digging in the dirt, planting, harvesting and cooking activities. A new wonderful opportunity for children to learn how to go from garden-to-table was offered by NYC Parks Public Programs in collaboration with Katie’s Krops and Allergic to Salad. This class teaches children how to start and sustain food producing gardens; harvest, cook healthy meals, and understand how science and cooking are closely related than it meets the eye. Chefs Heather Meehan and Christy Robb joined forces to bring this free of cost farm-to-table experience to children 8 to 13 years old.

The NYCParks Workforce Development unit provided us with trainees Tysha Dade and Keith Smith who assisted Garden Kitchen Lab throughout the growing season. This program specializes in training opportunities and career coaching with NYCParks.

Garden Kitchen Lab is offered at the McCarren Play Center. For more information contact Fabiola Cáceres at fabiola.caceres@parks.nyc.gov

Homemade Pesto Sauce

One of our staple recipes is homemade pesto sauce. You can use basil, parsley, cilantro, kale or spinach, this summer we made a basil pesto sauce kindly donated by Gotham Greens, a worldwide pioneer in hydroponic agriculture using clean energy. #GothamGrows has been one our sponsors for some years now supplying greens and herbs seedlings to our gardens. Today’s basil was harvested by our community children at the St. John’s GardenKitchen Lab station with the guidance of Dianne Bliffeld, a new Board of Education instructor.

Garden Kitchen Lab – St. John’s on BRIC TV

We are very proud Garden Kitchen lab was featured on BRIC TV’s Brooklyn Stories. This local initiative is now offered at Red Hook Recreation Center, Sunset Park Recreation Center and McCarren Playground Recreation Center. This is just the beginning of what Garden Kitchen Lab has to offer to the communities and NYC Parks, stay tuned!

Special thank to St. John’s Recreation Center Management, especially to Andrea Williams who runs a super tight ship with the after school-drop-in program at St. John’s. Her dedication and passion to the well being of these children is inspiring.
